Thoughts from our Commander

Recently discovered diaries of George Washingburn from the time he
accepted a commission in the Virginia Guards under Colonial Governor
Lord Dimwittle have recently come to light. In these diaries
Washingburn a newly appointed brevet colonel scribbled his recipe for
success: “Always wear your uniform and sword. Glower and make your
eyes bulge at the pronouncements of fools to whom it is impudent to
swear at. Say little that is not a command to a subordinate. Trust no
one and do not spare the lash. But above all be precise in all things
especially your toilet.”

While lacking in military experience, Washingburn learned from early
mistakes. His last entry speaks volumes regarding his future
determination to become America’s first regent: “It is wise to avoid
capitulation, particularly if you shall hang for it.”
