A person wanting to live would have panicked and fought for land
inducing exhaustion and coronary implosion. As a dieing fool this rush
to oblivion induced an artistic euphoria. He began swimming with the
current expecting to be miles and miles adrift just under the surface
and soon to be gone forever.

In twenty minutes his head plunked into the bulkhead of a private
pier. Eventually he climbed the ladder and emerged onto a beach
estate closed for the season. He wandered the local landscape in his
bizarre nakedness before forcing his way into an outbuilding that
served as a storage house for the main residence a hundred yards up
the beach. Here he found an immense store of cheese.

Many weeks later, at dawn, he emerged, far more constipated than
when he arrived, and wandered inland wearing his water shoes, mask
and snorkel only. One mile east he found a shopping center and on its
periphery several bins for donated clothing. The bins were stuffed and
its overflow lay about in paper or plastic shopping bags. In one bag P.
money located a very large, light-blue, flannel nightgown decorated
with small darker-blue flowers. This he put on.

Nearby he found some abandoned groceries which included a can of
soda and small bottle of olive oil. He drank from both.

How long can a crazy-man thrive? How he was able to walk eighty
miles in four days living off of the refuse outside of fast-food
establishments was a wonder in itself. He was in the city. In the
financial district where executives averted their eyes from what they
believed to be either just another homeless lunatic or a walking
advertisement for a new video game.
