Twisted, the New Gaming Experience
by Hero Heeto
Apache-Liberal studios released their long-awaited new multi-player game
'Twisted.' It can be played as a subset of Civilization's Decline or
independently. The game was in development for 18 months and reportedly
cost $ 168 million dollars to produce. How much of the 'production' budget
went for advertising and marketing expense the studio won't say, but
judging from the purchased hype around the game it is probably a significant
amount. More troubling are the fan-leagues of the game, several of whom
went on a real-world rampage that burned down portions of downtown
Milwaukee.
The game itself begins with the two subsets of power: Manipulating markets
and purchasing politicians; or rising to prominence through control of the
sex-slave and illicit drug trade. At some point in the game negotiation breaks
down and the inevitable warfare breaks out, with users, bidders and other
players constantly changing sides in an endless variety of assassination,
terrorism and military expedition. The interesting feature of this game, is that
dependent upon the variables, an individual player can also play his 'morphs'
or other-selves as chance would have created it. In real life one is always
stuck with the result of one's choices. In this game one can still 'play'
alternative outcomes, which gets confusing when the outcome of variable A
ends up trying to kill the outcome of variable B etc.
While the studio loudly proclaims that the game is not 'fixed' the open-source
players league has already put 10,000 play-hours into it and claims that 99.5
per cent of all choices lead to disaster.
Students at Libertarian University theological seminary were given advance
copies and several experienced epiphanies while playing. One student had to
be hospitalized for near shock from his spiritual awakening. "Seeing the
equivalent of 2,000 years in the world of the flesh and suddenly for an
inexplicable moment I witnessed the alternative strategy of the Kingdom of
God through the presence of an avatar that resembled Jesus Christ." Liberal
Apache Studios had no comment concerning this revelation.
Copies went on sale last week and shortages are reported. Scalper's
advance copies are reportedly selling for $ 200-500. In Los Angeles several
people were assaulted and robbed for copies, though the unique Internet
serial registration number will probably give them away unless the game is
played in Russia, Romania or Pakistan. Ownership of the game is punishable
by death in China, Iran and Arabia.
Other Games:
Arrested Experience has released its low-budget game 'Who am I, and
where is my Wife.' The gamer must wade through an assortment of virtual
memories concerning his missing lover/wife and try to find her or confront
the reality that none of these memories are true. It's a mystery game of the
highest order. What forces are at work in this distortion of love or memory!?
There's an advisory on the package warning that people with an
inadequate sense of personality should not play the game. After an
all-nighter playing this one I went into a fugue-state that lasted
through-out the morning. Fortunately I crashed and upon awakening
recalled my own identity, though as I walk along the street I see women
who remind me of her... even if there is no her! This game is obviously not
for everyone. Arrested Experience considered creating a version for women
but concluded it wouldn't be profitable. Company spokesman Alerd
Fontanbleu told me: "Females aren't into these things like males are, and
don't seem to form the kind of lasting obsessions that can be evoked by this
game's menu."
